BLACK LIVES MATTER

Over the past three weeks people across the US have already protesting over the death of George Floyd an unarmed black man in police custody. Since then the Black Lives Matter movement has come to life again throughout many countries with protesters taking to the streets demanding an end to police brutality and racism

In Dunedin hundreds of people gathered at the Otago Museum reserve to show solidarity with the movement They marched down George Street to the Octagon where a rally was held

The Auckland march which started at Aotea Square, headed down Queen St and ended at the US consulate where protesters took a knee and observed a minute of silence for George Floyd

Members of the Ethiopian and Somalian communities addressed the crowd on the Black Lives matter movement along with social justice campaigner Julia Whaipooti who talked about the use of armed police in predominantly Māori and Pasifika areas

For many of us this is not a new moment in time not a hashtag

I took a rusty piece of garden art out of the garden. To clean it up I sanded it and painted it.

Upcycled artwork.

 Lockdown  2021

Lockdown is boring because I can't see mates and go out and do the stuff I like.

I don’t  like staying inside all the time and I do not like wearing a mask.

I went to the supermarket, it was odd and strange just seeing people's eyes.

I am also missing going to the gym doing the weights,  boxing and seeing the trainers. I am doing weights at home but it's not the same.

I am missing just going out. Dad and I are still working on my drag car but it is hard as we can not go out to the car shops and get the stuff we need.

Christchurch Earthquake

  • How have the Christchurch earthquakes had positive and negative impacts on our city?

  • Houses and buildings were destroyed. schools were closed down. and

  • 185 people died. The tourism in Christchurch was affected as people did not

  • want to visit because of the quakes

  • Newbuildings were built to replace damages. A positive during the earthquakes

  • was that communities came together to help everyone. the country is now

  • able to handle more earthquakes well because we have been through them,

  • we have earthquake drills in schools to practice. A Lot of people needed

  • to claim for insurance on their homes and the government had to spend a lot of

  • money to rebuild the city. lot of people lost jobs or were to scared to work in

  • the city.

  • What are some changes that citizens have made to prevent damage happening from potential future earthquakes?

  • There is now a limit on the height of buildings in the city. We practice drills at school to prevent us being harmed. Follow new rules when building to be earthquake safe.

  • Making the foundation of buildings stronger and the buildings that were still standing from the earthquake would have to be strengthened

Protests

Depression riots 1932

I strongly agree and support the depression protest because people were so suffered and frustrated.  Lots and lots of people lost their jobs and many of them went hungry.  The worse thing was that the government did't do more help to solve the problems. The people did't get good clothes food and shelters. Police were involved to stop the people. the wharves were shut down by the government. This caused a huge disaster for the economy of NZ because other countries could not trade in goods and services.
